The word ‘research’ originally meant ‘to search closely’ and was first recorded in 1570. It was over 60 years later in 1630 that it was first used to mean ‘scientific enquiry.’

Examples:

  • She is researching humpback whales for her thesis.
  • There is a lot of research on the issue of climate change, but still no-one really knows what is happening and what it means.
