‘Document‘ has several different meanings depending on the form of the word that you are looking at and the context. For example, the noun form, ‘a document’ is a piece of paper with official information on it or a piece of work that is stored in a computer.  Another noun form is ‘documentary’ and it refers to a TV program that gives detailed information about subject. The verb form ‘to document’ means to record information about something. ‘Undocumented’ is an adjective form meaning that there is no record of something.

What you can learn from this is that the different forms of a word can have different, but usually related, meanings. It isn’t enough to learn the root word, you need to know the other forms.

Examples: 

  • Watch the documentary about weevils on television tonight because we will be studying them in class tomorrow.
  • There have been 17 documented cases of Ross River Fever this year.
  • Can you get the documentation ready for the meeting this afternoon?
