A ‘framework‘ is a structure for supporting something. Surprisingly it is quite an old word in English and was first recorded over 350 years ago. The meaning has not changed.


  • In an academic essay your thesis statement and topic sentences form the framework for the presentation of your arguments.
  • Although I can see that the punishment is quite severe, we have to act within the current legal framework.
  • The framework for our new house is up. The building should be finished by the end of the year.
